Our Journey

Residents In Plumstead, Cape Town, were alarmed by the unsanitary conditions at a public open space (POS) on Gabriel and Bardia roads. The influx of people setting up tents due to legal restrictions amplified the issue.

To address this, the Gabriel Road Area Project Association (GRAPA) was formed in 2020, later becoming a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in July 2022. They sought permission from the City to transform the 3000-square-meter area into a community vegetable garden. Securing approval was challenging.

GRAPA, with dedicated community volunteers, readied the land, cleared it, levelled, composted, and fenced it. Monthly clean-ups, tree plantings, wall painting projects, and garden installations followed. Solar lighting and a mobile CCTV camera were added for security.

By August 2023, the garden produced various vegetables and an orchard was established. GRAPA relies on community support, including financial assistance, compost, and organic waste contributions, essential to their success. Their mission focuses on enhancing food security, biodiversity, and social cohesion by creating a space for community interaction and connection.
